There are a lot of items to collect, which requires extensive exploration, something that Sonic wouldn't have time for.
Being a rabbit, Jazz can run fast, and speed is a major component of the game, warranting instant comparison to Sonic the Hedgehog. Jazz Jackrabbit is a combination of several styles of platform game.
